Developer Program
Developer FAQ
1. What kind of hardware and software do I need to be a There Developer?
First, you’ll need a PC that meets the minimum requirements for running There. Painters will need a paint program that can save files in .jpg format. Examples include Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Paint.
Builders can use 3D modeling packages like Autodesk's Gmax and 3DS Max for 3D developers which support file import for .3DS file format. Builders will also need a paint program like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.
2. Can I be a builder if I’ve never created 3D models before?
It is helpful if Builders are already familiar with the 3D modeling packages like Autodesk's Gmax and 3DS Max. Builders must be able to ensure that all LODs (Levels of Detail) have been properly specified, that the number of vertices in their model is approximately the same as the number of vertices in the sample models provided and that the collision mesh contains as few vertices as possible.
If you’re a beginning Builder, it’s best to familiarize yourself with the basics of your 3D modeling software first. If you’re a brand new designer, you may find it easier to start with Stylemaker and the Painter ToolKits, which allow you to customize pre-existing models.
3. How much does it cost to submit and create products?
Different types of items will have different submission costs. There are 2 types of fees associated with creating custom products in There: a one-time submission fee and a wholesale fee, which range from approximately $.015 to $10.00 USD depending on the type of item being submitted. View a current list of submission fees on the Price List page.
Submission fees exist to help offset the cost of approving and maintaining custom designs. The Submission fees have been structured in such a way that any designer who sells ten copies of their design will easily cover all submission costs, plus make a profit!
4. How do I make money as a There Developer?
Developers can make Therebucks by creating popular designs and then selling them to other members at a profit. There are currently three ways to sell copies of your design to other members:
- fixed-price auctions
- direct member-to-member sales
- regular auctions
Selling items via fixed-price auction is the easiest way to make Therebucks. To sell an item via fixed-price auction, go to the Order Items page on the Developer site and click Auction. Then select the number of copies you’d like to put up for sale, along with your asking price. With fixed-price auctions, you will only be charged the wholesale price once a copy has sold. Whatever you charge above the wholesale price is yours to keep as profit!
Please note: there is a listing fee associated with all auctions. Alternately you can choose to buy copies to keep in your My Things menu. Any items in your My Things menu may be sold to people directly - just find a buyer and agree on a price (use the give/receive function to make the trade).
If you'd like to have buyers bid on your designs using regular auctions, just set up an auction with an item from your My Things menu and see how high the bids go. Any designer who sells ten copies of a custom design should easily turn a profit.
