Safety Tips

There is a great place to meet new friends, but it’s always important to be careful. Here are a few basic tips on how to recognize the good guys from the bad guys:

The Inside Scoop on In-World Security

Our virtual economy enables you to enjoy shopping, trading, and selling items to other members. However, to help maintain the security of your account, we recommend that you keep the following advice in mind:

1. Never share your password or secret answer.
Our employees will never ask you for your password, and true friends won't ask for it either. If you give someone your password, they'll be able to access your inventory and steal your stuff. Report any attempts to gain access to your account to Customer Support.

2. Make your password and secret answer hard to guess.
To create a secure password, use a mix of numbers and letters that no one else knows. Do not use your birthday, anniversary, or pet's name as your password.

3. Don't give someone else access to your email account.
By giving someone else access to the email account that you used to register, you may also be giving them access to all your important account information.

4. When in doubt, change your password.
If you've given your password to anyone recently, or if your password is an easily guessed word or a word from the dictionary, you should change it immediately.

5. Never share your credit card number.
Our employees will never ask you for your credit card number in-world or via email. If you call Customer Service, a representative may ask you to verify the last four digits. Any attempts to gain your full credit card number should be reported immediately to Customer Support.

6. Use the secure trade window for all trades.
To begin a secure trade, find the item you'd like to trade in your MyThings or ChangeMe menu, then select the Trade option for that item.

7. Report scamming and phishing attempts.
If you believe you've been scammed, or if anyone in-world asks you for your password, secret answer, or credit card number, you should click their nametag and choose Ignore. Then report the incident immediately to Customer Support.

8. Log out when you're finished.
Log out of your account when you need to go away from the keyboard for an extended period of time, especially when you're using a public computer, a friend's computer, or any computer that you share with someone else.

The Safest Way to Have Fun

There is a great place to meet new friends, but it’s always important to be careful. Here are a few basic tips on how to recognize the good guys from the bad guys:

1. Don't believe posers.
Don't trust anyone who claims to be a famous actor or actress, supermodel, modeling agent, rock star, movie agent, or celebrity in real life. And if they ask for your password or for personal information, you should click their nametag and choose Ignore. Then report the incident immediately to Customer Support.

2. Don't share or post personally identifying information.
Personally identifying information is anything that could be used to locate you offline, including your real full name, your home address, your location, your home phone number, your cell phone number, or a photograph that shows what you look like.

3. Keep your online friendships online.
Exercise caution and common sense if you decide to meet your online buddies offline.

4. Seek help offline for serious issues.
We’re always here for you, but in-world is not the right place to seek advice or counseling for serious issues like depression, medical concerns, or abuse of any kind. Instead it's best to get the help of a trusted resource offline for these things. You should also be careful of anyone online who claims to be a counselor or therapist, as they may not have your best interests in mind.
